About the Artwork
By placing a young woman with a direct gaze but ambiguous expression in the position of Raphel’s Renaissance portrait of the same name, I invite reflection on the evolution of artistic portrayal of female beauty. I used oil on canvas in a traditional realist manner, with a dark umber background and classic pose, but my subject’s naturally slumped posture, piercings and tattoo show that she is undeniably contemporary.
