I painted this portrait of a Cuban musician I chanced upon when travelling in Havana several years ago. To reference the multi-layered aspects of that fascinating city, and create the brightest possible image, I chose to paint her in acrylic on top of layers of patterned paper and then covered it in a coat of resin. The background colours are a reference to the vibrant graffiti on the wall behind where the musicians were performing. The word “Clave” means a set of repeating rhythmic accents that is the underlying rhythm pattern used in Afro-Cuban music, which I think encapsulates the
