About the Artwork

It a marvel that some skills have passed, unchanged through the ages. I was delighted to meet this sailor twisting hemp fibre for oakum, to caulk the seams of his boat just as it has been done for centuries. It was like seeing a scene out of C.S. Forester brought to life, and fascinating to learn that some ancient skills are not only preserved, but are unsurpassed by modern alternatives.
I was drawn to the sailor's character and love the contrast of his graceful, nimble gesture to the rustic setting.
