A shimmering commotion in a tidal backwater caught my eye as we left the beach in Carmel. Investigating, I was thrilled to find a tumult of brown pelicans grooming, bathing and shuffling position in the golden light. This was my first time encountering these wonderfully prehistoric and entertaining creatures, and they are a joy to watch and paint for their lively antics and dramatic diagonals. I selected clear gesso for the wood panel, both because I love its slightly sandpapery tooth for translucent layers, and to contribute natural texture and warmth to this scene.

"I strive to give permanent form to fleeting moments of grace. Favouring organic subjects, I enjoy exploring the idiosyncrasies that distinguish an individual. My devotion to studying the specific character of light and and its ability of light to transmute the quotidien into something remarkable remains constant throughout."
