“Smile” is a 30x 24” work on wood that highlights the innocence of childhood by placing her in the most disgusting of places, a dirty bathroom. There is a single light illuminating the room and the child seems to glow angelically in this putrid place. The smell emanating from the unflushed toilet wafts from the painting and we may find it uncomfortable to look at the scene. The little girl is protected from the smell with a gas mask as she stands in the foreground glowing angelically while the perspective of the bathroom is forced to pull the viewer into a place they may not wish to go. “Smile” gives us a glimpse of the inevitability of all children growing up into a world we might wish they never witness.
