This painting captures a beautiful experience hiking with my dog on a sunny fall day at Cypress Provincial Park when I was recovering from Covid. I was attracted to the brilliant bursts of vegetation against the darks of the inky, peaty pond and velvety forest as well as the serenity of the water lilies. I was mesmerized by the reflections and harmony of the landscape which brought me joy and comfort at a time of social isolation. I worked with 3 colours + white in a la prima (all-in-one) approach emulating plein air in the studio. The restrained palette was liberating and effective in creating the diversity of colour and harmony found in nature. I loved the inherent abstract nature of this scene and the sense of place felt in our local mountains.
