Flowers that are past their prime speak to the artist in me. When no longer perfect, tulip stems and leaves form lovely curves and bends while being drawn gently downwards by gravity. The blossoms swoon, eventually dropping their petals, exposing the stamen and pistil. This painting was inspired by a fading bouquet of birthday tulips on a fireplace mantle. I took the liberty of simplifying the original double red blooms, painting classic tulips in a variety of colours. A lovely floral-patterned tile was created to soften the actual fireplace brickwork.
