"The Lamb Shearers" shows the work of a New Zealand sheep station. Shearing is a back-breaking - but lucrative - profession. It's hot, sweaty intense manual labour that some consider the toughest job in New Zealand. Ranchers pay for these services to keep their flock healthy as the price of wool is less than the cost to shear. Unshorn sheep overheat in the summer and their skin prone to infections. The sheep, however, can't appreciate the favour bestowed. Herded into tight spaces by barking dogs, deprived of food, manhandled, buzzing clippers, blaring music, the sheep don't enjoy the experience.
