Seven Haida mortuary poles stand vigilant by the sea at SGang Gwaay. In the years before European diseases decimated the population and the village abandoned, the Haida placed the bones on their honoured ancestors in cavities carved in the top of these inverted poles. Now in a circle of life, these poles nurse new growth that will someday consume the poles returning them to the forest.
