Last spring, I was captivated by the unusual pastel yellow of wild irises blooming in a shallows of the lake near my home. Their delicate colour and luminous reflections inspired me to capture this fleeting moment while teaching a limited palette workshop at TOSH. I challenged the group to interpret the scene using a palette of just Indian Red, Cerulean Blue and Lemon Yellow. The soft, pastel yellow was the focal point, contrasted with a background of muted, neutral tones, which allowed for the luminous reflections. This painting represents a significant moment in my artistic development as I had simply, and quickly allowed myself to respond intuitively to the subject, embracing colour, light and spontaneity. It was perhaps the first time I felt I had succeeded in translating my immediate emotional response to nature into paint.
