About the Artwork

Inspired by my travels through Japan, this painting explores the quiet harmony between refined architecture and the surrounding natural world. It is based on Nikkō, a small mountain city north of Tokyo, home to the historic Tōshō-gū Shrine, established in 1617 to honor Tokugawa Ieyasu. Set within a serene cedar forest, the shrine’s richly ornamented structures—particularly the luminous Yōmeimon Gate—embody a balance of craftsmanship, spirituality, and natural beauty. In this work, I was drawn to the way these man-made forms emerge from the landscape with grace and restraint, creating a contemplative atmosphere where history, design, and nature coexist.
