Scale and distance…
These are two things that always capture my awe when I’m in the remote mountainous tracks of wilderness on Vancouver Island. When I started my work on this piece it was what I wanted to try capture and share; the grand scale of the high country in Strathcona Park. How even though it was over 10km away, the mountain "Nine Peaks" seems to tower above me and that I was the so alone it felt that I was the only person left on the face of the Earth. I wanted share that sense of scale and solitude that was created by that massive mountain, all hazy and dull blue as it loomed in the distance and to blend the representational aspect of painting with the emotive quality of the landscape. To not just show what it looked like to me, but rather how it felt to me to see it’s grandeur in as I sat in the utter stillness of the landscape.
