Susan Burnham Neilson
Kelowna, British Columbia
A lifelong artist with Fine Arts studies at McMaster and the University of Toronto, Susan transitioned to full-time painting in her British Columbia home studio in 2017 after many years teaching art.
The artist's daily practice starts with curiosity, and blends a classical approach to drawing, with experimentation and improvisation; to create paintings that are at once precise, lyrical, and rooted in empathy for the natural world.
Intimate bird portraits and poetic botanical studies make us feel hopeful for change that begins with caring. Stepping back from the closely observed details, to the larger more abstract view in each composition, we are also reminded of universal connections.

"Through art, I celebrate subtle balance of order and disorder in nature. My work is inspired by the resilience of wild survivors and by intricate connections in ecosystems. Art is my way to share hope for the future, where change begins with caring. "
