The glacial erratic, know as Sashima by the Songhees first nation, at Harling Point is an iconic location in the city of Victoria. Overlooking the Juan de Fuca straight and the near by Olympic Mountains in Washington state, it is a place of serene beauty. Though I wanted to create something beautiful, I also wanted to create a metaphor for the isolation that I think we all felt during the time of the COVID19 lock-downs. Alone and at the whim of the forces that we couldn't control, like the tides slowly wearing down stone as it's battered day after day. It's became something for me to focus on and something I could control while it seemed the world was falling apart around us. It was at the time it provided me with an act of defiance against the consuming anxiety and isolation, to focus on creating something of beauty in an ugly time.
