About the Artwork

Inspired while winter hiking in the alpine regions of Strathcona Park on Vancouver Island, I was dazzled by the contrast of the aptly named Black Spruce forests in relation to the brilliantly white snow-covered meadows. The afternoon sun casting long shadows, like dark fingers stretching out to seize the last hours of our day.

For this work I focused on the geometric qualities of the forms in the landscape. I strove to create a realistic depiction of the landscape through a blending of representational and impressionistic approaches, using colour as the primary vehicle to drive the form-based approach.
