Grounded to the land, silhouetted against an ever-changing sky, reflected in movement over the lake surface, the majestic White Pine stands as a sentinel. It is this view that excites me, as it is the destination to which I am headed after a long day’s paddle, traversing lakes, creeks, beaver dams, upward scrambles and descents through the forest. Through the heat and the blackflies, this is the reward. That wonderful feeling of serenity and accomplishment. The memory of place stays with me still and sustains my creative process in my studio. I carry ink, pastel and watercolour for mixed media studies on site and complete larger oil works in my Hamilton based studio. ‘Sentinel’, Algonquin Park, is painted with sweeping gesture of energy, leading the eye with liquid movement. Tree, earth and spaces between, whorled together in the depiction of pure movement.

Working primarily in oils I paint with loose gestural brushwork on canvas or panel after I have developed value and compositional sketches with pastel, ink and watercolour. Larger paintings are developed in the studio based on site work.
"Much of my inspiration is found in nature where I seek out the silence sitting by the lake at first light, watching the sun rise, and the mist slowly clear. Many of my pieces are painted on location. Painting at low light under an immense ever changing sky is glorious."
