About the Artwork

This artwork (Wood Assemblage) is made from first growth Douglas Fir tongue and groove which has been randomly cut and shaped until a composition was initiated. Nothing was premeditated - once the suggestion existed, I pulled it forward, reinforcing the imagery with paint and stain. 'Stamp River', as I remember, both turbulent and tranquil.

These wood assemblages are compositions that randomly emerge from cutting, shaping and arranging pieces of wood, most of which is aged tongue and groove Douglas Fir. Once assembled I sand and paint and stain. The finished piece is waxed and polished.

"I aspire to work as easily with wood as though it were a pencil, so I might scribble and doodle until there is something worth strengthening, aiming for a suggestion that might be easily acknowledged, all the while moving at such a pace that the material seems to assemble itself."
