The Kotodama Series is a body of work that visualizes the energy carried by words through painting.
Each piece begins with language written directly onto the canvas. These words are not explanatory, but traces of emotion and intention. Through a repeated process of masking, painting, rewriting, and concealing, language and color accumulate in layers, gradually dissolving into form while remaining embedded beneath the surface.
The dimensionality of these works does not come from heavy impasto, but from the quiet depth created by compressed layers of text and pigment. For this reason, the work cannot be fully translated through digital images; it is completed only through the physical presence of the original painting.
This series was initiated as a response to the digital age、an attempt to ask again what art truly is, and what it means for a work to exist beyond endless reproduction and consumption.
The first work in the series, "Tether of the Dawn", offers encouragement: the moments before sunrise are often the hardest, yet morning always comes. An anthem of support for fellow dreamers moving forward through darkness.
