Tahlequah’s common name is J 35. She is a twenty year old female killer whale that is a member of J Pod, a family of Southern Residential Killer Whales that live off the Pacific Northwest Coast. On July 24, 2018, Tahlequah gave birth. Her newborn calf died shortly after birth. It was then, sadly that Tahlequah and her pod family began their 17 day journey, traveling over 1,000 miles along the coast mourning her dead calf. With the support of her family she was able to push and prod her lifeless calf through the ocean’s waters.
