What a beautiful, fun day painting at McGuire Lake in Salmon Arm, BC. Today I painted the Dame’s Rocket. Dame's rocket flowers, scientifically known as Hesperis matronalis, are often associated with deceit or a fleeting, captivating fragrance, particularly strong at night. The species name, matronalis, indicates the flower was a favorite of married women, possibly due to its association with the March 1st Roman festival of Matrons. Women gardeners particularly liked the flower so “matronalis” offers the “Dame’s” part of the name.
