Audrey Dagger
I'm from Manitoba, inspiration of Margaret Laurence and Ernest Thompson Seton. We have every landscape from desert to tundra, our winters are harsh and dark, our summers are like Eden. The seasons have much to do with how I work -- outside in summer lush with fruit and flowers, autumn's alien yellow and orange light-filled foliage, the winter retreat into studio, portrait study and anatomy, the joyous return to plein air work when the pasqueflowers open their lovely petals between shrinking patches of snow. I studied traditional oil painting in northern California at the Atelier of Virgil Elliott. The emphasis in my work is on beauty, character of subect, and archival quality in my choice of materials and their application.
Why oil? Because of the rich body of knowledge pertaining to its use that stretches back through the centuries. Because the greatest paintings in the world were painted with it. Because the smell of it is like standing in a sunny field of flax.
