Pixillation was not a word when I started exploring watercolour in the early 1970s. Inspired by Mondrian's work I began to work with flat brushes in watercolour to develop works that examined abstraction, while retaining a representational finished image. Many individual strokes and transparent glazing create the complex images. My constant goal? Make each transparent glaze or stroke work with its neighbour.

Sister Island is a notable landmark on the eastern side of Muskoka's Lake Joseph. It rises directly from the water, a scoured granite shore to the west. Its pines cling to the east side's cracks resisting the everyday, year round constant brisk west winds. Eventually they succumb, replaced by new growth. It is usually too rough to approach in the afternoon's wind. Morning is another matter. No wind. Now a very small human powered craft can explore.

Clear still light shows the dramatic pines' relfection there in the calm water. Each individual stroke now suggests that smooth surface as it runs across the paper.
