In her series Oceans, The Sacred Weight of Water, Annette Arndt paints the shoreline as a threshold, a narrow and restless seam where water meets land and sky. It is the place where presence feels closest at hand. The Salt Kisses the Sand as the Stars Wink holds that seam at night. Sea foam thins into the sand in long, breathing washes, and above it the dark sky carries the faint pulse of starlight. The painting's tenderness lives in its title: a vast ocean, humbling in scale, is at this hour and this edge simply touching the shore, over and over, the way a familiar hand does.
Built through many transparent layers of highly pigmented watercolour, the surface gathers an oil-like depth while keeping watercolour's inherent air. Shimmering metallic and mica passages catch and release the light as you move past, so the water never settles into a fixed image. The scene glints, recedes, and returns, much like the memory of a night beach.
At just under two feet by two and a half, the work carries genuine presence: a quiet, luminous field for a room meant to slow a person down.
