This painting developed from a plein air at Government House gardens. I originally had painted purple irises at the bottom right. However the sunny cheerful lighting didn’t translate well with the dark purple ones in front of me, so I replaced them with a yellow one to give a lighter feeling to the composition and to draw the viewer’s eye up to the main yellow and white iris.

Painting from life has always fascinated me. I love seeing flower petals animated by gentle breezes or inhaling the deeply scented perfume of colourful iris and rose blooms, as they “pose” before me under dappled sunlight.
"My primary objective when painting on location, is to seize the drama - a specific group of flowers or landscape into a lively composition."
