Dealer’s Choice is a meditation on chance, play, and the material culture of leisure. A still life of playing cards is transformed through watercolour into a study of rhythm, repetition, and surface. The title, borrowed from card games, suggests both strategy and surrender. What is chosen and what is left to fate. While at first glance the subject may appear removed from foodways or landscape, it continues my exploration of the ordinary objects that carry cultural weight in Newfoundland homes. Cards have long been a part of kitchen tables, family gatherings, and community halls, often interwoven with stories, songs, and the work of daily life. By elevating this familiar pastime into a work of art, Dealer’s Choice reflects on the social spaces where identity is built, negotiated, and remembered. The painting honours not only play but also the quiet labour of creating community, reminding viewers that culture is shaped as much by moments of gathering as by survival itself.
