Only after this painting was complete did I realize how the figure sits in bas-relief against the very shallow picture plane. That’s now one of my favourite aspects of the piece; it reminds me of the glazed terracotta rondelles of the 15th century Florentine artist Luca della Robbia. But my colouration is not like his blue, gold and ivory; that will have to be for another painting!
