In this painting, extreme perspective and massive forms are deliberately placed at odds with the small square format and the medium, which is watercolour painted directly on wood using watercolour ground as the substrate. The paint interacts differently with this substrate, compared to paper. It pools, rather than absorbs. Values and textures are built up layer by layer to create a sense of volume and space. Irregularities in the application of the substrate become part of the form of the subject.
