This series is inspired by a collection of drawings and notes I found among a box of old family photos. My great uncle had listened to short wave radio programs while making notes and drawings on the backs of McDonald’s placements.
The drawings were quirky and cryptic with strange numbers and arrows, along with notes about the radio programs, the weather and even personal notes and reminders to himself.
My intention with this series is to give voice to the uniqueness of his work, layering the pages into a contemporary painting, creating depth and mystery as parts of them peak out through the paint. The nondescript writing on each piece alludes to the lost art of cursive writing. The resulting pieces reveal past memories that tell a bit of his story through a contemporary lens.
