I used stone backlighting to really make this grizzly the focal point of the painting. I wanted to at the same time create a softness in the background and foreground with soft, earthy and muted colours. The grizzly bear is such a powerful animal and I loved how he took a place of authority in the painting by sitting him at the top of the ridge and having him looking downwards.
