I wanted this painting to tell a story about days gone by and simpler times. The affection of these horses to one another is just a part of the picture. In order to be hitched together they must be equally matched in size and strength, and of course, they have to get along. I had the pleasure of being a guest on their ride one Christmas and I was endeared to this team of horses named Sugar and Spice and wanted to preserve the memory that so many can relate to with fondness.
