On a trip along the North coast of Ireland a few years ago, we came across this bizarre, weather-worn crop of rocks on the road down to the Giant's Causeway (Unesco Heritage Site). Though the Causeway is known for its incredible hexagonal rock formations, these ancient beauties spoke to me.
A few miles up the coast, there was a fabulous ruined medieval castle called 'Dunluce', crumbling into the sea below. In a wild coincidence, Dunluce turned out to be the 'seat of Clan MacDonnell' - my own ancestors.
