This little painting revisits an iconic viewpoint from “the turtle spot” where roadsigns call for caution around the nesting grounds of the western painted turtle. The turtles can often be seen sunning themselves on a log in the slough here… along with the occasional sighting of an intrepid landscape painter. I painted this particular version from the comfort of my studio during the colder months, as I embarked on a winter’s project exploring simplification of the colours, shapes and forms of the landscape using the limitation of small surfaces. This is one of my favourites.

"In painting as in life, whatever distance you travel just opens up further vistas for exploration. Subtleties, bold statements, complexities of relationships, colour, colour, colour. I wish I could paint forever!"
