Two young sisters modelled for me last autumn, and after I had completed a convincing number of “proper” portraits of them, I started painting just for myself. I loved the timeless stability of this symetrical pose on its square canvas, undermined by the essential unsustainability of the captured moment. (And no, the pear did not survive the girls’ many attempts at balance.)
