Painting “Somewhere in the Orchard” was a joy, following the flow of light across the white shawl and up into the delicate flowers. The pose itself came about as part of a quite different project. The composition for that one required cherry blossoms, which ended up in the model’s hair. But in the process we experimented with going right out into the orchard, to play around with different configurations. On a whim she ducked right in behind the blossoms, and voila.
