Did you know the gemstone topaz can appear in colours other than amber? My eight-year-old grandson became fascinated with his birthstone, and was transported when unexpectedly gifted with a blue specimen. Perhaps some of that feeling comes through in this little celebratory painting, where the topaz manifests in the colour of the background but also in the sparkling play of light. Here, colour feels like a third element, transforming both shape and form into living matter.
