Water is a suitable theme for my ill-fated but much treasured (in memory) walking journey in Burgundy some years ago. Unremitting rain over the previous weeks had rendered much of the terrain unnavigable, and decisions had to be made on the fly. The rain did let up enough to reveal the reflection of these pond-front old houses. I will admit that the “at a Loss” part of the title is not so much about that journey however as about my painting process on this one, when the time came back in my studio to decide on an approach to the visual chaos.
