White peonies are incredibly photogenic, displaying large ruffled blossoms which usually rise well above the surrounding foliage. Naturally their enchanting textures, and full spheres are a favourite subject for many artists.
In Chinese and Japanese art the peony is used symbolically as the “king of the flowers”, or the “flower of riches and honour”.
The delicate closed buds are mysterious as they often have a pale blush-pink outer “guard” which bursts opens to reveal the sumptuous inner snowy bloom. This watercolour depicts the moment when the guard breaks open, revealing its inner secret.
