Michelle McCutchon
Vancouver, British Columbia
Stone carving is a way of life for Michelle McCutchon. She first earned her Red Seal as an Auto Repair Technician. She repaired vehicles, welded, did body work, and painted using tools like grinders and dremels.
Not realizing it, she was building the skills she now uses to carve stone.
Today she sculpts with many of the same tools. She works with stones like soapstone to marble, granite, and high-quality jade. Her pieces range from one-inch pendants to large works up to five feet in diameter and weighing as much as six tons.
A self-taught artist, her first sculpture—Sea Breeze, a reclining nude in Brazilian soapstone made in 2004—was carved with ease and without measuring tools and no guidance.

"Rock is my medium of choice because you have one chance to it carve it right, just like you have one life to live."
"The more challenging a piece is, the more satisfying it is to complete. The physical demands reward me with a cathartic therapeutic release." ***
