This classic brownstone on Fifth Avenue in New York is home to one of the oldest arts organizations in the United States, the Salmagundi Club (1871) and The American Watercolor Society (1866). I have had the good fortune to be accepted into two of the AWS's international juried exhibitions, in 2015 and 2022, both held in this historic venue. I attended both exhibitions and awards dinner galas, and this painting represents the moment when I took one last glance at the façade from the bottom of the stairs before setting off to stroll through the streets of New York. Elegant corbels, egg and dart archway, acanthus keystone and carved gloss black doors reflect cool evening light and warm incandescent light spilling from the lavish interior. The intent in this painting was to evoke a sense of welcome and opulence of this historic portico, and the heady feeling of walking out into a great city at night.

"The subject of my work is light, whether painting sweeping historic architecture, remote landscapes or intimate still lifes. My work is based on travelling to explore both urban and wilderness landscapes, experiencing, observing and then portraying how light changes our perception of these environments."
