Trees actually do not heal; they seal. Looking at this old tree wound on Western Larch, you will notice that it does not “heal” from the inside out, but that the tree covers the opening by forming specialized “callus” tissue around the edges of the wound. This area is often covered with mosses, lichens, and algae that find the right environment there to live.
