About the Artwork

This painting looks at transition through colour and contrast. Cool greys and warmer golden tones move across the hummingbird’s feathers, using temperature shifts rather than detail to create visual movement. Changes between sharper and softer edges help guide the eye while keeping the form intact.
The dying leaf at the end of the branch acts as a counterpoint to the hummingbird. The bird is commonly linked to energy and vitality, while the leaf suggests decline and natural cycles. The small buds beneath the branch suggest continuation and growth, set against the fading leaf. Placing these elements together creates a direct contrast between life and fading, motion and stillness.
Instead of treating transition as a single moment, the work approaches it as something continuous. Shifts in colour, edge, and texture carry this idea, reflecting how change tends to unfold gradually rather than all at once.
