About the Artwork

When describing "To Prince Edward Island", Alex Colville referred to his woman with the binoculars as "the searching vision of the female" and as a contrast to the "passive approach of the female gaze". Inspired by this work, my painting continues along that vein to further represent a woman with camera, seeing, recording and thus remembering; standing firm in her point of view.

Susan Friedman

Toronto, Ontario

By blending figures into textured backgrounds I am expressing our interconnectedness; we are our contexts. This speaks to responsibilities we have to one another and to the world around us. Starting with abstract collages, I merge them with images from sketches or photos, transforming chaos into tranquil, contemplative art.

"I love the dance between intention and spontaneity. My process takes me from an often chaotic world to a quiet, contemplative space."
