I carved this abstract form almost intuitively, which is very unusual for my sculpture practice. For as long as I can remember, I would always approach a new block of stone with a goal vision in my mind as to what I was going to carve. However, with this piece, a remnant from another larger sculpture, I had a vague idea of the form, but then I just let my hands choose the shape.

I kept in mind the direction of the grain of the stone, trying to utilize it to best advantage, but the curving, spiral condensing into a bullet-like projection was something that developed subconsciously. I think the resulting form is pleasant and interesting. The title refers to the wing-like form that begins at the ground, on the outside of the form and spirals inward.

The stone is cipollino marble, from Carrara, Italy and the name means onion in English, pertaining to the layers of grey green striations that run through the yellow white background.
