About the Artwork

This is a moody atmospheric oil painting in the tonalist style. Tonalism is my genre of choice because it encapsulates everything I try to achieve...paintings that evoke a meditative, pensive mood, that stirs the memory and is able to "project an emotion, rather than a realistic or representational depiction of a certain place" (David Adams Cleveland).
Work that is conducive to reverie... thus the title 'Evening Reverie'

Virginia Bergmann

Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia

While visiting various stately homes around Toronto, or attending ballet in a turreted old Victorian, I would be suddenly captured by a dark, moody landscape and be lulled into a quiet respite by the serene, atmospheric, ethereal glow. My goal is for my paintings to evoke that same feeling.

"Painting in the tonalist style, I create atmospheric, moody landscapes which convey a feeling for the passage of time and evoke in the observer a sense of quietude and pensiveness. I hope to impart some lulling solace amidst the discordant clamour of this world."
