About the Artwork

This limestone sculpture is another in Binkley’s ongoing series of what he calls his “Rubenesque” figures. These are large proportioned nudes that are depicted in humorous situations and this one is a female nude playing a violin.

Note the way Binkley has carved enough of the sculpture to delineate the violin and the bow, but these seem to disappear and flow into the figure. Her heavy set body is made to appear lighter by her delicate small feet and she points her left toe, lifting the heel in a dainty manner. Her hips are shifted in a classical contraposto pose

Michael Binkley

North Vancouver, British Columbia

Binkley is best known for his original stone sculpture in a wide range of idiom, medium and scale. He strives to create artwork that entices the viewer to touch.

"I had my epiphany at the age of 20 to turn my artistic path to stone sculpture while in Florence, Italy after I witnessed first hand the unfinished works of Michelanglo. My first love is the human form, but I also enjoy creating abstracts and wildlife iimages."
