About the Artwork
Sitka spruce is one of my favourite trees to draw. It is native to the Pacific Northwest Coast and is the largest of all the spruces. Indigenous uses for Sitka included making baskets and hats from roots and branches, sap for medicine, and if you're hungry, the inner bark can be eaten. Needle tips make a tasty tea or fermented into beer. The lumber is very valuable and spruce wood was once used to build airplanes as in the "Spruce Goose".
