About the Artwork

I painted several version of this iconic landmark that focus on the sign itself and how it looks at different times of the day. The time of day is early morning just after sunrise when the light is soft and muted. This painting also focuses on construct of the landmark and is reminiscence of the subjects and artistic styles of the 50’s. I continued to focus on the linear elements of the supporting structure within the iconic Farine Five Roses against the flat blue of the sky. The sign is cropped vertically to emphasize and highlight the metal sculptural elements holding the letters so that it becomes as important as the sign itself. The flat blue background becomes geometric abstract forms within the compositional elements to occupy the negative spaces of the composition, but the light bouncing off the sky is absorbed and reflected back by the white of the letters. This strong blue overtone unifies the composition.

Carol Loeb, SFCA

Yarker, Ontario

Collectively, Carol’s work is a contrast of the engineered or built environment to the wilderness. She works mainly in acrylics, usually blocking in dark and mid-tone areas first then adding thin layers of saturated colour to create luminosity and depth. The resulting realism goes beyond photographic representation of place.

"To capture these emotive qualities of the subject and have the image go beyond the purely representational, I often use contrasting saturated, complimentary colours to create a vibrancy and emphasis that goes beyond the pretty picture."
