Vanderhoof, in the geographical centre of BC, is situated on the remains of a historical glacial lake bed. At the end of the ice age, the glaciers retreated and the sediments at the bottom of the lake formed a large fertile basin that now supports large agricultural fields producing grain and hay crops. However, the most obvious feature of the community is Sinkut Mountain, an extinct volcano, that can be seen from far away as a marker for the community. The mountain currently supports communications structures and an observation tower for the Forest Service.
I live close to the base of the mountain, with historic chunks of lava in our fields as a constant reminder of its history and (unlikely) potential.
