Not For Sale
I have had mixed feelings about painting animals. On the one hand, they are a vital and visually interesting part of “everything that is.” On the other hand, I am wary of “owning” them. Somehow that reluctance got turned around in this painting, because my question was not “How can I put this creature (here, Meles meles, the European badger) in my painting?” but “Who am I as a badger?” It was a journey of discovery as I studied everything I could find about Meles meles, and then imitated the postures I had seen in nocturnal video footage. Fascinating!
