Many of my larger paintings begin with a series of small sketches in gouache or ink. There is a freshness and freedom in this approach, which is often hard to reproduce in the finished larger paintings. This sketch depicts an early thaw of surface ice on the Squamish Estuary channels. I was struck by the crispness of the air and soft crackle of the ice melting and dropping.
